Altona Miniature Steam Trains

Living in a big city like Melbourne means there is always something to do but sometimes you have to look hard to find it.

We hadn’t heard of the Altona miniature steam trains before but after a quick google of “kids activities” we soon came across it and what a little gem!

If you have children, you will know that they get bored easily and going to the same play centre over and over can get a little tedious for parents as well. It’s great to have something unique like this to mix it up a bit and that even the parents can enjoy especially if you have train fanatics in the family.

The miniature steam trains day out is hosted by hobby club Altona Miniature Railway on the third Sunday of every month and the trains are driven by its members. All ages are welcome to ride and parents can accompany children. They have two diesel engines that normally run as the passenger trains but they also have private steam and diesel engines belonging to club members that are used as well.

The track is 1.2km long and runs for about five minutes through lovely hilly grassland as well as three different man-made tunnels that the kids squeal with delight as they go through. We attended on an opening day so it was pretty busy and we lined up for about 10 minutes each ride but there is a train every few minutes so the crowds move quite quickly. However, be prepared to line up when it is busy.

Rides are affordable at $3 each and you can pick up 11 tickets for $30 that don’t expire for a year so you can keep them for your next visit!

There is also food available including the 1st Iramoo Scout Group sausage sizzle who attend every second month and all funds raised go towards getting them better facilities. There is also a coffee truck for the parents and boy will they need it as they build up the energy to go on back to back train rides.

The miniature steam trains is the perfect day out for kids that offers something different to burn some energy and keep them entertained for at least a few hours. You might find you enjoy it yourself but just be prepared to go on endless train rides with the kids so grab a coffee and get moving! Make sure you put the dates in your diary so you don’t miss out.
