D’Lish Fish // Port Melbourne
There’s a fish and chippery on every corner these days so with so much competition, what makes one better than the other?
For us, it’s all about the chip first followed by the rest of the menu. If the chip doesn’t meet our expectations then the rest doesn’t matter. A good chip should be crispy on the outside and soft on the middle. It should never be soggy or leave an oily taste in your mouth. It should have the right amount of salt….OK, maybe we are being a bit picky but you get our drift right?!
There’s two in Melbourne that have met our expectations so far and one of those includes D’Lish Fish in Port Melbourne. They are a family-run business situated right on the dock of Port Melbourne harbour with lovely views of the pier and the Spirit of Tasmania.
Their menu consists of what you would expect from a fish and chip shop but with delicious extras that make them stand out from many others including their amazing burgers. We have been a few times now and it is always consistent with the food and everything we have tried has been of a high standard. On this occasion we chose a vegetarian burger ($9.50), a 1/2kg pack of chips ($6.50) and two hot dogs ($3.00 each).
We especially love the way the burgers are presented here and it was absolutely divine! The bun was melt in your mouth delicious and the veggie patty was equally scrumptious. They may be a fish and chip shop, but they will soon be known for their burgers as well and they have a range of options including beef, fish and chicken. The hot dogs were great value for money due to the size of them and were well received and the chips, well we already described them above. We order a 1/2 kilo of chips and it is plenty for a family of four if you are having sides. You do have to pay $1 for a small pottle of tomato sauce which is a let-down but with avid sauce lovers like ourselves, we can oblige.
We have also tried the salt and pepper calamari on another occasion, and the fish and the portion sizes are very generous and very fresh. They also offer dessert options like Nutella balls and a gelato bar filled with incredible flavours as a perfect option before a walk along the beach. There’s plenty of packs available for families or big groups making it even better value for money but overall D’Lish Fish is great value anyway.
The only improvement here could be the overall ambience of the place. It could do with some music and a bit more cleanliness. Service is sometimes a hit and miss but generally it is fine. They have seating options inside and outside and high chairs for the little ones. They also have a range of drink options available in the fridge.
We will continue to frequent D’Lish Fish whenever we are in Port Melbourne due to the excellent quality of food and we look forward to trying out their dessert options in the future.
