Proud Mary // Collingwood
Ah Proud Mary– where have you been all our lives? how had we not heard of you until now?
With over 40k followers on Instagram and 4.3 stars on Zomato from over 4k reviews (that’s high!), we knew this cafe was going to be epic and I guess we were the last ones in Melbourne to find out.
We checked them out this week and at the perfect time, after they recently released a NEW menu created by their NEW head chef.
The cafe itself is tucked away amongst an old style brick building in the backstreets of Collingwood and sends out a gorgeous rustic, factory-style vibe. It’s not a big place but high ceilings and window tables give it a spacious feel.
We sat down at a booth and were instantly greeted with a welcome, table water and a coffee order.
The team at Proud Mary know their coffee and have become famous for it in Melbourne. They have their own blends which are roasted by them and are unlike any other. We must admit, the coffee was served a little different for us as it didn’t appear milky like most coffees you would expect. That could possibly have been the brand of almond milk they were using but the bean itself was lovely and smooth.
The menu is sophisticated and unique to many places we have frequented. It was hard to choose between the dishes because they all looked enticing but we could not look past the ricotta hotcakes and the potato hash and we were so glad we did. The ricotta hotcakes were seriously a highlight and the best we have come across in Melbourne so far. Light and fluffy hotcakes served with the most exquisite citrus syrup and sweet corn puree (don’t let it put you off-AMAZING!) and paired beautifully with a dollop of lemon ricotta, crystallised white chocolate, basil oil and buttered popcorn. We have never tried anything like it and it was so well balanced with textures and flavours. We could not stop scoffing them down. These are a must try and should never leave the menu!
The potato hash was also an epic dish. Crispy potato hash topped with thick cuts of bacon and perfectly poached eggs. Drizzled with a garlic, cream and anchovy sauce.
We also got to try out the super popular watermelon and pork belly salad and we can definitely see why it is. This dish definitely tantalises the tastebuds with a combination of tamarind glazed pork belly, watermelon, salted cucumber, peanuts and a chilli lime dressing. An Asian inspired dish that is super refreshing and light.
All portion sizes were generous and left us feeling very satisfied. Prices were affordable and on par with what you would expect from a cafe of this calibre. We were super impressed with the food that we talked about our return before we even left the building.
We are so glad we got to share in the hype that Proud Mary has been receiving and the food for us was a highlight.The service was also really friendly and attentive and we got to watch the queues out the door for their takeaway coffee. We visited on a Wednesday and the cafe was still super busy so be prepared for a wait on the weekends. Definitely worth it though!
