Cocktails and fairy tales go together magically at one of the newest bars to hit Melbourne’s buzzing nightlife scene.
Hidden down a small alleyway off Lonsdale St in Melbourne’s CBD, Storyville combines a tasty tipple with a mythical setting of some of your favourite childhood fairy tales. The fun starts from the outside with the facade of the building decorated as if you’re entering a story book. You then climb up a small stairway which is encased in tree roots and represents falling down Alice in Wonderland’s rabbit hole before entering an illuminated bar filled with giant magic mushrooms, bright neon lighting, winding vines and tree stumps. It’s not a huge space so seats are hard to come by at times but if you can score one at the bar you will get to watch your cocktail being made underneath a towering toadstool.
The menu features a range of cocktails inspired by classic literature and some of your favourite children’s books. One of the most popular would be the Polyjuice (Harry Potter) which combines gin, ginger liqueur, kiwi basil and lime and comes served in a cute potion style glass. The cocktail itself was delicious and had a lovely balance of sweetness.
The New York Peach (James and The Giant Peach) combines cognac, kirsch, cherry, peach and lemon and comes served with an insect! This cocktail was quite small so you might want to savour every sip. It wasn’t as sweet as the Polyjuice with a little bit of tartness to it. There’s plenty of other great choices on the menu including Charlie’s Winning Ticket and Through The Looking Glass. All cocktails average around $18-$22 and they also offer a beer and wine menu. One thing this place could really benefit from would be to serve food as they’re not offering anything at present.
We did expect the bar to be a little more interactive but aside from that it’s a really unique and intimate spot to enjoy an after-work drink or late evening boogie. They have a DJ booth set up so you can party in to all hours of the night whilst imagining yourself in a magical wonderland.
