Acai bowls have been taking the world by storm for a while now and we at The Melbourne Diaries are jumping on board!
Yet to try our first Acai bowl ( I know, what the even?!) we were ecstatic that we lost our ‘Acai virginity’ at Acai Brothers. in Port Melbourne because they are setting the bar high!
Firstly, let’s start with what Acai actually is. Acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is a superfood berry from Brazil that looks pretty similar to a blueberry. It is packed full of antioxidants and helps towards the healing of a number of ailments whilst also tasting absolutely delish. Due to its lower sugar content, the Acai berry actually doesn’t stay fresh very long so it is frozen in to a puree for longevity. From there they are also freeze-dried in to a powder form and that’s where the Acai bowls come in.
Acai bowls are a huge craze in the foodie scene in Melbourne and for good reason. Full of a tonne of healthy antioxidants and a breakfast that tastes like a dessert, what is not to love? Acai bowls are best described as a smoothie bowl usually topped with a range of scrumptious healthy treats. The smoothie part is usually made up of the Acai powder mixed with frozen fruit and often coconut water.
Acai Brothers is a super-food franchise launched by two best mates who are passionate about health, fitness and food. Port Melbourne is the latest store to open just four months ago and is owned by lovely mother/daughter duo Melissa and Brittany. It’s not hard to see why these guys are already becoming so popular as they offer everything you want from a café.
As soon as you walk in you are greeted with a friendly face and the customer service is excellent from the beginning to end (and customer service is MOST important!). You can truly sense that they have a passion here as they interact with the customers and check in with you to ask for feedback. They offer great suggestions for what you might like out of their many delicious options but let’s be honest, you will be happy with any one of them. After mentioning we were feeling like something a bit chocolaty, the Choc ‘Treat Yo Self’ Bowl was a no-brainer ($17.90) and what a treat it was. Topped with cacao nibs, choc buckini, coconut yoghurt, our choice of three fruits and raw treats, this bowl was heaven in every bite.
We soon realised why everyone was in love with Acai bowls and what we had been missing out on. It felt like we were having ice-cream for breakfast without the guilt. Even the kids were convinced it was ice-cream and we felt totally OK letting them demolish it knowing the goodness inside every bite. The toppings were very fresh and Melissa said everything was made on site in the morning and again mid-way through the day to ensure customer’s are getting the freshest produce, which definitely makes a difference.
The Acai bowls come in two different sizes, baby bro (cuuuute!) and standard size (pictured). Prices range anywhere from $11-$18 and although they may be considered by some as slightly expensive, you would pay that price for a breakfast in a café and they are fully satisfying and well worth it. They also offer smoothies, juices, raw treats and of course coffee.
We also loved the sleek black interior of Acai Brothers Port Melbourne making it an inviting place to sit and enjoy your Acai bowl or coffee. They are also in the process of setting up an outdoor area for these beautiful summers days we have coming.
We could not have been happier with our first taste of Acai bowls at Acai Brothers and only wished we lived in Port Melbourne to frequent them weekly. There is no better way to start your day than with a healthy breakfast fuelling your mind and body. We will definitely be back to try out the other speciality bowls on offer.
